Composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was in the French army during WWII. He was captured by German troops and sent to Stalag VIII-A, a prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz, Germany. Messiaen composed Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time) while a prisoner, and it was premiered in the camp in 1941. The music is inspired by the Book of Revelation and its depiction of the end of the world. Although composed during one of the bleakest times in the 20th century, Messian’s music is about hope, and the ultimate defeat of evil. This concert is a multi-media show with music, photos from prison camps, and photos depicting hope for our troubled world.
